The Fool's Jig - Bampton | Jack Hogsden
A tune I feel never gets played enough, the Fool's Jig hails from the Morris tradition of Bampton, and can be seen danced by 'the Fool' at dance outs around the world. The fool - throughout history - was regarded as the best dancer within the side, and would perform jigs such as this to showcase their skills. This particular version is based upon the writings found in Lionel Bacon's infamous 'Black Book', titled 'A Handbook of Morris Dances' published by the Morris Ring, however rhythmic influences come from the great players, in particular William 'Jinky' Wells. There are also many similarities with another fantastic Bampton tune, titled 'The Morris Reel', which I may get round to posting one day!
Here it is played in C on a Vintage Castagnari Handry 12 C/F/Acc in Clubbed tuning, generously loaned by Norm Warren.
